“Most of their discussions do not contain any good, except of the one who enjoins charity or goodness or peace-making among people.” (Qur’an 4:114)
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.”
Another hadith that is used to brow beat people into silence. I can’t even recall the number of times people have used this hadith to shut down legitimate questions that seekers of truth had.
“leaving that which does not concern him.” I have never seen this hadith used in response to someone asking questions like: “What is your favorite food?” , “Where do you live?”
I have always seen this question used in response to sincere truth seekers. Islam teaches that when we die the elevator only goes up or down. We are either going to be eternally in hellfire, or eternally in paradise, there is no option c.
So when Muslim youth want to be certain of their aqidah, or a proof for a position in jurisprudence or that a certain that a Shaykh really did travel to distance planets and the above hadith is quoted to them it is truly done in poor form.
“Those who conceal anything of the clear teachings and true guidance which We have sent down even though We have made them clear in Our Book, Allah curses such people and so do all the cursers.” (Qur’an 2: 159)
You will even hear directed at students of knowledge that in regards to schools of jurisprudence “You do not need to know the proofs!“. What?
When someone replies like this it is because either they do not know the proofs themselves, or they do not wish to subject their proofs and evidences to scrutiny.
The youth, students of knowledge, seekers of truth are to be treated with such disdain? If anyone takes an interest in matters of spirituality and religion it shows that they have the aptitude for such matters.
Does this mean that everyone will have the same ability comprehend the evidences. Not necessarily. However, we must nonetheless do our level best to answer them according to the knowledge that Allah (swt) has provided us with.
May Allah (swt) guide us to what is beloved to Allah (swt).

I’ve always taken this to mean prying into someone’s personal life or seeking information like backbiting or gossip, as for knowledge it’s important for everyone to research and ask questions till their satisfied, not just stop at what a so-called Shaykh might presume is enough, I find this is a way of stunting personal growth and restricting an individual.
After all, if a shaykh is unable to answer a question than saying I don’t know isn’t a weakness but rather a strength and should not use a narration of the beloved Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, to hide their own ignorance.
