No Mahdi / Jesus is Dead

“Allah said, O Jesus,I shall cause you to die and will exalt you in my presence and shall purify you of the ungrateful disbelieving people, and shall place those who follow you above those who deny the truth, until the Day of Judgement; then to Me shall all return and I will judge between you regarding your disputes.” (Qur’an 3:55)

“Today those who disbelieve have lost all hope of (damaging) your faith. So, do not fear them, and fear Me. Today, I have perfected your religion for you, and have completed My blessing upon you, and chosen Islam as Dīn (religion and a way of life) for you. But whoever is compelled by extreme hunger, having no inclination towards sin, then Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.” (Qur’an 5:3)

“It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance the true world view to manifest over all other world views, although the those who associate others with Allah detest it.” (Qur’an 9:33)

Shaykh Abdullah As Salmi (an Ibadi scholar) says:

Let it be known that the Prophet has no Prophet after him. What people narrate that Christ will descend has not been heard before.”

Shaykh Nasser bin Abi Nabhan (an Ibadi scholar) says:

Some people narrate that Allah sends the Mahdi and Anti-Christ appears. They also believe that Christ descends. All of this is far a cry from the Truth. What we know is that Jesus is dead.”

The majority of Muslims have been waiting for an eschatological messianic figure, be it a second return of Christ Jesus (upon whom be peace) or a Mahdi (in the case of the Shi’a) or some combination of the both (as in the case of the majority of Sunni Muslims and the Ahmadiyyah movement.)

These ideas of a future salvific figure have left the Muslim on a fatalistic course of not wanting to establish Islamic governance while on Earth. Islam retreats from the economic, political, legal and military sphere being regulated to public holidays and private acts of worship.

Dear Sir-May I ask, in the context of your beliefs regarding Christ, why did the substitution theory arise ? What, in your mind, was the origin of this belief ?

    • Greetings, Toby. The belief of ‘substitution’ may have been an oral tradition circulating around post Christ. That tradition held sway in some circles. Some Muslim exegetes were apparently influenced by these traditions. This becomes apparent in the idea that Allah (swt) made some other person look like Christ Jesus and that person was killed instead.

One thing is clear. There is no asbaab an nuzul (occasion of revelation) for Qur’an 4:157.

Secondly, there is no rigorously authentic oral tradition that has come down from the Blessed Messenger (saw) to us, on this matter.

Third, as stated in thematically in the Qur’an itself, it is clear, Jesus is dead.

      Hope that is helpful.

    As salaam u alaykum brother,

I can accept the nonexistence of the Mahdi, I wonder about the Dajjal and major or minor signs of the day of Judgement, could you provide the Ibadi stance on Dajjal and the signs of the day of Judgement. I have looked but can’t seem to find a definitive answer.

Also I would like to ask if it is at all possible to have connection with someone who could clarify issues through email, I have the intention to attend the brothers in London but this is somewhat of a journey for me as I’m based outside London.

    jazakAllah Khairun.
