Does the Qur’an instruct us to disregard all hadith ?

“But there are, among men, those who purchase lahwa alhadith (vain hadith), without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.” (Qur’an 31:6)

To say that the Qur’an instructs Muslims to reject all the hadith would be to reject the Qur’an itself!

How could I make such a claim?  Because Allah (swt) calls the Qur’an, “hadith” within the Qur’an itself!

For example:

Then leave Me alone with such as reject this (hadith) alhadith by degrees shall We punish them from directions they perceive not. (Qur’an 68:44)

So we can see from the beginning that that Allah (swt) saw fit to refer to the revelation itself as hadith.

Also, the Qur’an makes a distinction between hadith in chapter 31 verse 6 as follows:

“But there are, among men, those who purchase lahwa alhadith (vain hadith), without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.” (Qur’an 31:6)

Here the Qur’an is warning us against lahwa alhadith (vain hadith).  If  Allah (swt) so wished he could have simply used the word ‘hadith’.

If there are  ‘lahwa alhadith’  -vain hadith than it stands to reason there are hadith that are not vain, fruitless, or futile.

The Qur’an is a book in which nothing has been left out.

“We have not neglected anything in the Book, then to their Lord shall they be gathered.” (Qur’an 6:38)

It would have been sufficient to say do not believe in any hadith other than this hadith – the Qur’an.   However, we do not find such a verse in the entirety of the  Qur’an!

For example, I could say to you, “You may eat all the apples in the basket.”  I can also say, “You may eat all the apples in the basket that are good.”

The first sentence indicates that it is permissible to eat every apple contained in the basket.  The second sentence indicates that some apples in the basket may not be good, so use discretion.

So most unfortunately, religion has come along to challenge Islam. This religion is known as  ‘Quraniyoon‘  are actually ascribing deficiency to Allah (swt).  May Allah (swt) forgive us!

There are some examples in the Qur’an that refer to hadith outside of the Qur’an.

What would be the point of referencing hadith outside of the Qur’an if all hadith were useless; and utterly futile?  Why reference hadith if they did not contain some newsworthy information?

Example 1)

“Has the hadith reached you, of the honored guests of Abraham?” (Qur’an 51:24)

If one continues to read through the verses they will see that this is obviously a recounting of the events that are contained within Genesis chapter 18:1-15 of the Bible.

Example 2)

“Has the hadith of Moses reached you?” (Qur’an 20:9)

If one continues to read through the verses they will see this is obviously a recounting of the events that are contained within Exodus chapter 3:1-5 of the Bible.

Allah (swt) never says that all hadith are baseless or lies.

Allah (swt) simply informs us that it is Allah (swt) that is the best to relate hadith. We find that in the following verse of the Qur’an.

“Allah! There is no god but He: of a surety He will gather you together against the Day of Judgment, about which there is no doubt. And whose hadith can be truer than Allah’s?” (Qur’an 4:87)

Who would argue against this point?    Human beings can deliver mercy and compassion, but who can be more merciful and compassionate than the one who is The Most Merciful & The Most Compassionate?

Thus hadith can be true but Allah’s hadith is the truest; for who can be truer than Allah?

ALLAH CONFIRMS HADITH OF PROPHET MUHAMMED OUTSIDE OF THE QUR’AN?  YES!

“When the Prophet disclosed a hadith in confidence to one of his consorts, and she then divulged it (to another), and Allah made it known to him, he confirmed part thereof and repudiated a part. Then when he told her thereof, she said, “Who told you this? “He said, “He told me Who knows and is well-acquainted (with all things).” (Qur’an 66:3)

It would be very difficult to imagine a Messenger of Allah (swt)  confirming part of a hadith (The Qur’an) and repudiating part of a hadith (The Qur’an)if the word hadith was used exclusively of the Qur’an.  This is the death blow to the position of which ‘Qur’an only Muslims‘ are unable to escape.

It would also be hard to imagine that if all hadith outside of the Qur’an were absolutely false how could the Blessed Messenger (saw) confirm part of a hadith that was false in the presence of his Lord?

For example, there are ahadith in the collection called Bukhari that relate to this particular incident.    You can read more about the above verse and the events surrounding it here:

http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1305&Itemid=122

I have no reason to discount this hadith of giving an accurate portrait of the events that happened.   In fact, it is in the context of this entire event that the Allah (swt) reprimands the Blessed Messenger (saw) for his error as well.

“O Prophet! Why do you hold to be forbidden that which Allah has made lawful to you? You seek to please your wives. But Allah is Often-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an 66: 1)

This hadith in Bukhari and other sources also recounts what is known in historical circles as ‘the principle of embarrassment’.

You can read more about that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criterion_of_embarrassment

Hadith can refer to inspiration or dreams that Allah (swt) gives people in their sleep.

“Thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of hadith and perfect His favor to you and to the posterity of Jacob – even as He perfected it to your fathers Abraham and Isaac before! for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.” (Qur’an 12:6)

“The man in Egypt who bought him, said to his wife: “Make his stay (among us) honourable: maybe he will bring us much good, or we shall adopt him as a son.” Thus did We establish Joseph in the land, that We might teach him the interpretation hadith. And Allah has full power and control over His affairs, but most among mankind know it not.”  (Qur’an 12:21)

“Twice we can see that Allah (swt) mentions that he will teach Joseph the interpretation of hadith.  In both instances, it is a reference to dreams.

“Behold! Joseph said to his father: “O my father! I did see (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrate themselves to me!” (Qur’an 12:4)

Now with him, there came into the prison, two young men. Said one of them: “I see myself (in a dream) pressing wine.” said the other: “I see myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head, and birds are eating, thereof.” “Tell us” (they said) “The truth and meaning thereof: for we see you are one that does good (to all).”He said: “Before any food comes (in due course) to feed either of you, I will surely reveal to you the truth and meaning of this before it befalls you: that is part of the (duty) which my Lord have taught me. I have (I assure you) abandoned the ways of a people that believe not in Allah and that (even) deny the Hereafter.” (Qur’an 12:36-27)

“So the king said: Surely I see seven fat cattle which seven lean ones devoured; and seven green ears and (seven) others dry: O chiefs! explain to me my dream, if you can interpret the dream.” (Qur’an 12:43)

“O, Joseph!” (he said) “O man of truth! Expound to us (the dream) of seven fat cattle whom seven lean ones devour, and of seven green ears of corn and (seven) others withered: that I may return to the people and that they may understand.” (Qur’an 12:46)

This is obviously a recounting of the events that are contained within Exodus chapter 41:1-36 of the Bible.

As Muslims, if we are to believe that the dreams we receive from Allah (swt) are all revelations than we are going to have to radically change our concepts of revelation.

I could elaborate more on this but I believe what is provided is sufficient to prove the following.

1) The Qur’an does not tell Muslims to reject all hadith,

2) The Qur’an does not tell Muslims to accept all the hadith.

3) The Qur’an makes it clear that hadith does not necessarily refer to divine revelation itself.

4) The Qur’an makes it clear that no hadith could be truer than the hadith of Allah (swt).

“Allah! There is no god but He: of a surety He will gather you together against the Day of Judgment, about which there is no doubt. And whose hadith can be truer than Allah’s?” (Qur’an 4:87)

This statement lets us know that even if hadith reach a state of mutawattir (mass transmitted) they still cannot clash with the clear teachings of the Qur’an.

Remember that this blog is called PRIMA QURAN

So what is Prima-Qur’an?

Prima is from the Latin word which simply means ‘First’ or ‘foremost’.

Prima Qur’an is about using the Qur’an,  primarily for guidance in matters of theology, jurisprudence, and spirituality.

Prima-Qur’an rejects any source that clashes with the teachings of the Qur’an..  It is about Muslims going back to the Qur’an first. It is about Muslims looking to the Holy Qur’an first and foremost for guidance and healing.

The position of Prima-Qur’an is distinct from the religion of the Quraniyoon religion.

Quraniyoon is a religion that broke away from the religion of Islam. If the truth be told in reality they reject the Qur’an as well.

I have yet to encounter any person from the Quraniyoon that can give us one text anywhere from the Qur’an where it tells us to disregard all the hadith.

    Salaamun aleikum, Brother Jason.

Insha’Allah, I hope you and yours are well.

I think your argument is fine as far as it goes; however, I don’t think it goes far enough, i.e. it does not consider ALL the relevant evidence.

For example, (45:6) states: “These are the signs / messages of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His signs / messages will they believe?” I would argue that when it comes to imaan (secure commitment), hadith are restricted to Allah and His Signs / Messages, which are to be found in The Qur’an as well as in the horizons (al-‘afaaq) and in the self (anfus) as per (41:53). In connection with the issue of imaan, consider also (77:50).

    • Bismillah,

walakum salaam wr wb. Dr. Syed Mustafa Ali. I hope that you are in the best of health and faith and a very happy new year to you and your family.

When I read your comment I couldn’t help but think that it is possible that my entry could be read more carefully.

All three of my points still valid.

      1) The Holy Qur’an does not tell Muslims to reject hadith (blank statement).

      2) The Holy Qur’an does not tell Muslims to reject all the hadith.

      3) The Holy Qur’an makes it clear that hadith does not necessarily refer to divine revelation itself.

If you would like to interact with any of those points you are certainly most welcome.

As regards to not looking at ‘ALL’ the relevant evidence. I simply gave the evidence that proves these three points. As I believe the Holy Qur’an to be a book in harmony with itself, I would not see the Holy Qur’an clashing with any of these points.

There are many places where Allah (swt) tells us not to take anything in deference to his revelation. In other words not that you cannot take other sources of information but that it is not to be done in deference to Allah’s revelation.

You quoted one such excellent example.

“These are the signs / messages of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what HADITH after Allah and His signs / messages will they believe?” (Holy Qur’an 45:6)

For example we find the following:

“Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what HADITH hereafter will they believe?: (Holy Qur’an 7:185)

“But they said: “Our Lord! Place longer distances between our journey-stages”: but they wronged themselves (therein). At length We made them as a HADITH (that is told), and We dispersed them all in scattered fragments. Verily in this are Signs for every (soul that is) patiently constant and grateful.” (Holy Qur’an 34:19)

Another example that is usually used by the Sola Qur’an (Quran only) people but again I feel really misses the mark is the following verse:

“Then what HADITH, after that, will they believe in? (Holy Qur’an 77:50)

This has to be understood in the general context of Allah (swt) giving warnings other wise we would be in a conundrum.

In other words if you would take it the way that the Sola Qur’an people would have us to believe it would mean than that any further revelation on the subject is not necessary for us.

Imagine Allah (swt) saying in what Hadith after that will they believe when he gives another warning followed up by yet more warnings.

If we to understand the text in the way that the majority of the Sola Qur’an (Qur’an only) camp what us to believe it would mean that this particular text is sufficient in and of itself to give warning about the hereafter and any other text in the Holy Qur’an giving warning could be ignored.

I am sure that no one who takes a Quranist position would affirm this.

It is my position that the three text that the Sola Qur’an (Quran only) camp uses is an abuse of the understanding of the word ‘hadith’ and the over all context.

Holy Qur’an 77:50, Holy Qur’an 7:185 and Holy Qur’an 45:6 do not make the claim that the Holy Qur’an is the only hadith that one can take.

The entire context makes it abundantly clear that Allah (swt) is the best to guide. If the warnings of Allah (swt) do not take root in the hearts of man than what will? That is the rhetorical question that Allah (swt) is posing in the Holy Qur’an.

Even looking at Holy Qur’an 45:6 we can see that this is clearly the case.

“These are the AYAT (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.) of Allah, which We recite to you with truth. Then in which HADITH after Allah and His AYAT will they believe?” (Holy Qur’an 45:6)

The context of this very verse does not allow either hadith or ayat to refer exclusively to the Holy Qur’an per say.

      Hope this is helpful.
      Sincerely,

  2. Muslim

I think verses like 45:6 do pose a serious challenge to traditional approach to Islam using so-called “Sahih” and “Hasan” hadiths as if they are like Allah’s verses (when they are NOT).

“These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement (Hadith) after Allah and His verses will they believe?”

However, I think the verse supports a primaquran approach. The verse does not say that all hadiths other than the Qur’an are automatically false but it implies that we must not “believe” in them for belief implies they are ipso facto true based on trusting the judgements of some middle age/medieval sectarian scholars.

Rather as your website advocates, each hadith on a case by case basis must be filtered through the Qur’an which Allah describes as the Criterion (Al Furqan) to give it the possibility or a certain degree of probability (that can vary from low to high) of being true. I think that the primaquran approach is most sensible.

So we should only “believe” in the Qur’an (since it is demonstrably from God)….we can verify the hadiths and thus we don’t “believe” in them without first verification with the Qur’an…we can have a measured acceptance of those that are in line with the Qur’an.

Thanks for this articles and the one previous to this one dealing with the excellent quotes by brother Joseph Islam who focuses only on the Qur’an unlike primaquran. It is nice that this blog came back. Alhamdulillah.

    • Bismillah,

Dear respected brother Muslim. As always I appreciate your comments. I think we are on the same page with the exception when you say:

“However, I think the verse supports a primaquran approach. The verse does not say that all hadiths other than the Qur’an are automatically false but it implies that we must not “believe” in them for belief implies they are ipso facto true based on trusting the judgements of some middle age/medieval sectarian scholars.”

As I believe the Holy Qur’an Allah (swt) says that he will explain the message to the Messenger and the Messenger (saw) in return explains the message to the the people.

Thus for me ipso facto if we can rigorously authenticate a statement as coming from the Blessed Messenger (saw) and it in no way conflicts with the message of the Holy Qur’an than for me personally I would accept it.

As I said I don’t expect devilry at every turn in regards to the hadith literature.

      Allah (swt) knows best.

“Thanks for this articles and the one previous to this one dealing with the excellent quotes by brother Joseph Islam who focuses only on the Qur’an unlike primaquran. It is nice that this blog came back. Alhamdulillah.”

Brother Joseph Islam excels at what he does best, and that is deflecting any attempt to hold anything as an authority on equal footing with the Holy Qur’an.
May Allah (swt) continue to reward and bless him, your good self and all on the path of truth to The Truth.

  3. Submitter

Brother, I checked the verses’ meanings. Nowhere they refer to “bukhari’s hadiths”. I am sure not all the hadiths are false. But looking for an accurate one among many is like diving into the ocean in search of a tiny shrimp . The problem is that his book contains way too much blasphemy against the Prophet and this almost makes me cry. I can’t truly respect it. Also several other verses of Allah forbids the use of them.
    Examples:
17:46 – “We place shields around their minds, to prevent them from understanding it, and deafness in their ears. And when you preach your Lord, using the Qur’an alone, they run away in aversion.”
Doesn’t this support the fact that we need learn mainly from Quran and take no other book?
16:105 – “The only ones who fabricate false doctrines are those who do not believe in God’s revelations; they are the real liars”.
3:94 – “Those who fabricate false prohibitions after this, and attribute them to God, are truly wicked”
This smells like Bukhari and Company. We all know that many things his group wrote about the Prophet are not true. Also they introduced laws which go fully against the words of Quran, yet they pointed out that they all came from Allah. Doesn’t this mean Bukhari’s group is the wicked one here?

77:50 -” Which Hadith, other than this, do they uphold?”
7:185 – “Have they not looked at the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all the things God has created? Does it ever occur to them that the end of their life may be near? Which Hadith, beside this, do they believe in?”

6:112 – “We have permitted the enemies of every prophet—human and jinn devils—to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications”.
We know Quran is the only holy book which Satan didn’t get to change, but the stuff written by Bukhari shows that Hadith is his way of corrupting our religion.

    • Bismillah,

      Dear brother “Submitter”

      You have stated:

“Brother, I checked the verses’ meanings. Also several other verses of Allah forbids the use of them.”

Could you kindly tell me any where in this article where I said that ‘hadith’ does refer to “Bukhari’s hadiths” ?

You have also said: “Also several other verses of Allah forbids the use of them.”

Really could you show me which verses Allah forbids the use of “Bukhari’s hadiths?”

What we do have are verses in the Holy Qur’an which clearly tell us that Allah’s hadith is superior.

  5. Reblogged this on primaquran and commented:

ALLAH CONFIRMS HADITH OUTSIDE OF THE QUR’AN?

  6. Greetings from your Muslim brother

This following statement is critical point that all Muslim sects need to adopt formally in their first principles:

“‘Allah! There is no god but He: of a surety He will gather you together against the Day of Judgment, about which there is no doubt. And whose hadith can be truer than Allah’s?” (Holy Qur’an 4:87)’

This statement lets us know that even if hadith reach a state of mutawattir (mass transmitted) they still cannot clash with the clear teachings of the Holy Qur’an. ”

The power behind mutawattir is that it is unlikely that multiple people independent from each other would report the same incident….of course there is a wide difference as to how many people at each link would have to report a narration for it to be mutawattir ranging from 5 to 70 or something similar large range.

However, the key word that our scholars do not fully appreciate is the word INDEPENDENT. Such a scenario of independent and multiple reports saying the same incident may have been possible in the past (it is possible today too but more difficult because of mass communication of tv and internet).

For example if we were living many centuries ago and we were on a search tower and saw a multiple people coming from different directions and we went to each of them before they congregated together and if each of them said that they are fleeing to this town because there are Mongol forces overrunning their villages, then we can assume that there truly is an attack by Mongol forces in the outlying villages is true and it thus makes sense to immediately fortify the city.

However, it we read a report that recounts such an interaction occurred does not prove it was true. There are motivations for why such a false scenario could have been documented.

I think (although I may be wrong) at least some of the mutawattir accounts do not present such a scenario in the text of the hadith whereby even for the narrator of the hadith, independence was clearly investigated to ensure that the reports were independent beyond any doubt.

But even if hypothetically the narrator is absolutely convinced there are multiple INDEPENDENT reporting a specific incident , without any independent other information, it will probably still be hard for us the readers to establish that there all the narrations were really INDEPENDENT and not just said they were by narrator(s) who is (are) now dead.

Again, the statement in the above article “even if hadith reach a state of mutawattir (mass transmitted) they still cannot clash with the clear teachings of the Holy Qur’an. ” is a critically important principle.

I think this is something that even the Hanafi and Maliki methodology (which are superior to the Shafi’ee methodology) I think do not fully take account of.

    Allah knows best.

I think it would be very helpful to add this statement to “About Prima-Quran” article to clarify that even a “mutawattir” hadith is still inferior to the Qur’an.

    • Bismillah,

    Lahwa Al Hadith/ vain hadith

Allah has sent down the best Hadith

    Sunnat Allah

Hadith Rejecters are using these verses in every occasion

“But there are, among men, those who purchase lahwa alhadith/vain hadith without knowledge or meaning to Mislead/Muslims from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule on the Path for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.”
    Qur’an 31:6

They Quote the Verse translated except the word Hadith .

    The real Translation

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).
    http://quran.com/31/6

I checked all the Available translations,
    http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/31/6/default.htm

I found that only Hadith Rejecters who translate it that way.

    Example:

    Shabbir Ahmed a known munafiQ

But among people, there are those who invest their time in HADITH which is unfounded, so as to lead those without knowledge away from the Path of Allah, making mockery of it (the Qur’an). For such there is shameful punishment in store.

    Dr. Kamal Omar

And of mankind is that who purchases Lahw-alhadees (absurd and senseless hadees) in order that he may mislead (people) against the Way of Allah without knowledge, and regards this (Prescribed Path of Allah) as a mockery. Those people: for them awaits a humiliating punishment .

“ Ibn Mas`ud commented about the Ayah: This — by Allah — refers to singing.”
Qatadah said: “By Allah, he may not spend money on it, but his purchasing it means he likes it, and the more misguided he is, the more he likes it and the more he prefers falsehood to the truth and harmful things over beneficial things.”
It was said that what is meant by the words
(purchases idle talks) is buying singing servant girls. Ibn Jarir said that it means all speech that hinders people from seeing the signs of Allah and following His path.

Scholars Agreed that the best Tafsir for this verse is :

An-Nadr bin Al-Harith visited Persia and learned the stories of some Persian kings, such as Rustum and Isphandiyar. When he went back to Makkah, He found that the Prophet was sent from Allah and reciting the Qur’an to the people. Whenever the Prophet would leave an audience in which An-Nadr was sitting, An-Nadr began narrating to them the stories that he learned in Persia, proclaiming afterwards, “Who, by Allah, has better tales to narrate, I or Muhammad” When Allah allowed the Muslims to capture An-Nadr in Badr, the Messenger of Allah commanded that his head be cut off before him, and that was done

this An-Nadr bin Al-Harith visited Persia and bought (ishtara) some books and stories and brought them to Mecca to oppose the Quran .
he was the one who said this (31. And when Our Ayat are recited to them, they say: “We have heard (the Qur’an); if we wish we can say the like of this. This is nothing but the tales of the ancients.”)

Al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haraam speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytaan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit.

That Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish they could be covered by the earth. And they will not conceal from Allah a [single] HADITH .
    Surat An-Nisā’

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, “This is from Allah “; and if evil befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, “All [things] are from Allah .” So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any HADITH ?
    Surat An-Nisā’

There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the HADITH a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

    Surat Yūsuf

Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them AHADITHs . So away with a people who do not believe.

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for HADITH .

Again lets Get the word Sunnata from the Quran and see

    سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ اللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا

Sunnah of Allah which has occurred before. And never will you find in the Sunnah of Allah any change.

There is not to be upon the Prophet any discomfort concerning that which Allah has imposed upon him. [This is] the Sunnah of Allah with those [prophets] who have passed on before. And ever is the command of Allah a destiny decreed.

    ====================
    =====================
we cant translate Quran word by word , we translate the meaning
And u cannot translate without any knowledge of the Arabic language.

    I will give one Example:

    Surat Şād verse 16

Waqaloo rabbana AAajjil lana qittana qabla yawmi alhisab

In Arabic the Word Qitt has two different meaning
    The popular is a Cat

So the verse will be translated as

And they say, “Our Lord, hasten for us our CAT before the Day of Account”

    Nonsense !!!!!!

    With the context

They say: “Our Lord! Hasten to us Qittana (i.e. our Record of good and bad deeds so that we see it) before the Day of Reckoning!”

    http://quran.com/38/16

Do u know what Allah Said about this techniques?

Do u know Who used to Do this?

“Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages and say, “We hear and disobey” and “Hear but be not heard” and “Ra’ina,” twisting their tongues and defaming the religion.”

    Surat An-Nisā’
    http://quran.com/4/46

“And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, “This is from Allah ,” but it is not from Allah . And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.”

    Surat ‘Āli `Imrān

    http://quran.com/3/78

And those who disbelieved are allies of one another.

    Surat Al-‘Anfāl
    http://quran.com/8/73

The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah , so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites – it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

    Surat At-Tawbah

    http://quran.com/9/67

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.
    They enjoin what is right
    and forbid what is wrong
    and establish prayer
    and give zakah
and obey Allah and His Messenger.
Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

    Surat At-Tawbah

Hadith also means statement so the verses about Moses (pbuh) or the guests of Abraham etc should become clear. It does not say anything about someone coming centuries after the death of Moses (pbuh) and recording his ‘hadith’ as rules/laws and a lifestyle outside of Allah’s revealed Book.
That does NOT conflict with the verses where Allah Swt mentions the Qur’an as hadith.

“These are the verses of God which We recite to you in truth. Then in what hadith (ḥadīsee) after God and His verses will they believe? – 45:6.

“We have explained for mankind in this Qur’an, every kind of similitude, but man is more than anything contentious.” – 18:54.
I would like to bold “contentious”.

“Have they not looked at the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that God has created? Perhaps their time is drawing near; so in which Hadith (Arabic: Hadisee) after this one will they believe?” – 7:185.

    • Dear Jay, First let us turn our attention to an oft repeated trope that is said time and again by ‘Quran-Only- Muslims.

“t does not say anything about someone coming centuries after the death of Moses (pbuh) and recording his ‘hadith’ as rules/laws and a lifestyle outside of Allah’s revealed Book.”

Just for clarity sake because I wouldn’t want readers to confuse this statement by thinking it is analogous to the Blessed Messenger (saw).

In other words that hadith came ‘centuries after the death of Prophet Muhammed (saw)’

Dr. Harold Motzki turns those assumptions on its head. You may want to have a look here.

      https://primaquran.wordpress.com/orientalist-dr-harold-motzki-takes-quran-only-muslims-to-task/
      https://primaquran.wordpress.com/orientalist-dr-harold-motzki-takes-quran-only-muslims-to-task/

As regards all the other ayats you quoted. Al hamdulillah. Nothing in those ayats would lead anyone to conclude that the Qur’an is the ONLY hadith.

Thus, these four points stills stand.

      1) The Holy Qur’an does not tell Muslims to reject all hadith,

      2) The Holy Qur’an does not tell Muslims to accept all the hadith.

      3) The Holy Qur’an makes it clear that hadith does not necessarily refer to divine revelation itself.

      4) The Holy Qur’an makes it clear that no hadith could be more truer than the hadith of Allah (swt).

      Thank you for your comment.

  11. Jay

There is no authority equal to Allah. That would be associating partners with Allah.

    • I may not agree with that statement. In the same way that when you go to the doctor or a clinic or go to the bank for a loan I will not accuse you of shirk because of a possible violation of “You ALONE we worship you ALONE we ask for help.” Things are more nuanced than we let on at times.

  12. J

*There are some examples in the Holy Qur’an that refer to hadith outside of the Holy Qur’an.

What would be the point of referencing hadith outside of the Holy Qur’an if all hadith were useless; and utterly futile? Why reference hadith if they did not contain some newsworthy information?*

Right, I normally sgree with your posts but Hadith means speech. It seems like you are trying to link when the Hadith is mentioned to the Quran to the Hadiths which are transmitted by the prophet. So you examples where the Quran says has the Hadith reached you (Abraham and Moses) it’s surely talking about the message. I’m not saying reject Hadith but these basis which you’ve put forth doesn’t say you must follow the hadiths which are found in the Hadith books. A better verse would be Surah 4:59 or 3:164.

    • Except that you absolutely ignored the following:

ALLAH CONFIRMS HADITH OF PROPHET MUHAMMED OUTSIDE OF THE QUR’AN? YES!

“When the Prophet disclosed a hadith in confidence to one of his consorts, and she then divulged it (to another), and Allah made it known to him, he confirmed part thereof and repudiated a part. Then when he told her thereof, she said, “Who told you this? “He said, “He told me Who knows and is well-acquainted (with all things).” (Holy Qur’an 66:3)

It would be very difficult to imagine a Messenger of Allah (swt) confirming part of a hadith (The Qur’an) and repudiating part of a hadith (The Qur’an)if the word hadith was used exclusively of the Holy Qur’an. This is the death blow to the position of which ‘Qur’an only Muslims‘ are unable to escape from.

  13. IMB

You mentioned “The Qur’an is a book in which nothing has been left out.

“We have not neglected anything in the Book, then to their Lord shall they be gathered.” (Qur’an 6:38)”

…but in another article in the same website it is quoted that 6:38 is NOT about Quran.
    https://primaquran.com/2020/09/17/nothing-left-out-of-this-book-the-manipulation-of-the-quran-only-religion/

    • That is correct. Because that is the verse that the Qur’an rejectors use to support their Qur’an Only position. If you showed anything it is that I need to make it clear in the above article that this is a verse that the Qur’an rejectors use. Other than that nothing in either of the two articles has been challenged.

If you have something do let us know.
