“And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and for a Paradise, vast as the heavens and the earth, that is prepared for the pious.” (Qur’an 3:133)
The Noble and Beloved teacher of the believers, Shaykh Massoud has shared with us:
The Shaykh is talking about a misunderstanding that has gotten into Muslims and has spread far and wide between them, and the Shaykh stated that it’s very weird. And that is for the person to indulge himself in collecting and collecting hasanat (good deeds), yet he doesn’t care that he’s also committing sins at the same time, he says it’s not a problem! Then he gave an example to show this weird mindset, for example:
Someone building a mosque on a certain place and a bar on another, and not just that, the Shaytan comes and does waswasa (whispers to the subconscious/the heart) , saying that here the block is worth 10, and here the block is worth 1, why? Because {He that does good shall have ten times as much to his credit: He that does evil shall only be recompensed according to his evil} [Qur’an 6:160], so he says see which one will be of more weight on the day of judgment??
Then the Shaykh laughed at the Shaytan insidious and sly moves, and how he tries to beautify the evil that is committed. The Shaykh then stated that this understanding is not correct, never. Because Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala doesn’t forgive whoever is insisting in his sin, even if he is performing mountains of deeds. Because Allah’s jannah and forgiveness is only for the pious, as he Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:
“And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and for a Paradise, vast as the heavens and the earth, that is prepared for the pious.” (Qur’an 3:133)
Furthermore, from the attributes of the pious/who ward of evil that if they committed a single sin they: “And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins,- and who can forgive sins except Allah?- and are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.” [Qur’an 3:135]
So don’t go on counting the number of deeds, because it will be of 0 help given that you’re committing a sin and not repenting from it.
Then he mentioned a narration to further indicate this meaning, ((Abu Hurayra said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah! A certain woman prays in the night, fasts in the day, acts and gives sadaqa, but injures her neighbors with her tongue.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ((There is no good in her. She is one of the people of the Fire.)) They said, ‘Another woman prays the prescribed prayers and gives bits of curd as sadaqa and does not injure anyone.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ((She is one of the people of jannah.))

Awesome, I’ve been thinking this my whole life. Quran says those who are clean and pure about what they believe, “mukhlaseen” won’t be harmed by shaytan’s tricks. If you insist on being dirty with sins by not even caring or being deliberate about them, how can you claim you’re walking a path of cleanliness/sincerity? It’s like the whole thing is a game to you. Or ‘spiritual Capitalism’ where you balance your ‘profits’ against your ‘losses’, where it’s all just about ‘net-gain’ without any consideration of heart whatsoever. Like heartless business owners. Anyway, salam
