Hating a hadith just for the sake of hating a hadith?

“Allah does not forbid you from doing good and being just to those who have neither fought you over your faith nor evicted you from your homes…” (Quran 60:8)

It seems there is much discussion among those who are suspicious of the ahadith; especially when it comes to the ‘hadith of the fly’.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should    dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.”  Source: (Al-Bukhari: Volume 4, Book 54, Number 537)

So what is heard is that this hadith sounds ridiculous therefore we should reject it!

The problem with this line of thinking is that it all too often unjustly restrains the supernatural to preconceived notions of what may or may not be possible, or fathomable.

The following could be true about this narration.

1) This hadith could be true.

2) This hadith cannot be proven true.

3) This hadith could be false.

4) This hadith cannot be proven false.

As there has not been any scientific research into this matter by any of the world’s leading universities; in particular those involved in microbiology it is best to withhold judgment.

Now, personally, do I think this hadith sounds a bit dodgy?  Yes, I believe that it does.

I have also found it noteworthy that the oil-saturated, ultra-rich gulf traditionalist are in no rush to throw money at a major university to investigate the scientific claims of the ahadith.

Note for example the massive printing press in Saudia Arabia which has the following interesting information:


Q3. “How many publications does the Complex produce per year?”

A3. “The production capacity of the Complex is ten million copies per year, of all publications which exceed 70 publications.

Q4. “What is the sum total of the Complex’s production of all publications so far?”

A4. Since its establishment, and till the end of Safar 1422/May 23, 2001 the publications of the Complex were about 165 million copies.”

That is quite an undertaking!

Keep in mind this is just Saudi Arabia, at one complex, let alone other places in Kuwait, and so forth.

Now it seems to me with this kind of financial backing a project could be funded in which a major university was asked to conduct experiments, on the issue of the fly, being dipped into a drink.

In fact, these people who claim that the ahadith are filled with verifiable scientific facts that the Blessed Messenger (saw) could not have possibly known 1400 years ago do not seem in any hurry at all to have such claims verified in the major universities today.

Many labs and universities are constantly looking for financial support.  I don’t think it is unreasonable to come up with a million dollars, or an agreed-upon amount to prove such claims.

However, I am quite taken aback when I see many people who attack this hadith simply because ‘it seems illogical’ or ‘doesn’t make sense’.

If that is the case a person would be forced to reject chapter 18: 25 of the Qur’an.

“And  they  remained  in  their  cave  for  three  hundred  years  and  exceeded  by  nine.”  (Qur’an 18:25)

Many people would assert that for a dog or a human being to be alive for 300 hundred years seems illogical, or that it doesn’t make sense.

I have already mentioned in a previous post what I would do if a major experiment was conducted on the claims of the ‘hadith of the fly’, and it was found to be true. I would repent for having doubts about it!

So here is my question to the two parties.

To those who reject hadith completely.  What would you do if an experiment was conducted in an established and respected university and the claims of the ‘hadith of the fly’ were true?

To those who believe all Sahih hadith is indeed representative of what the Blessed Messenger of Allah (saw) said.  What would you do if an experiment was conducted in an established and respected university and the claims of the ‘hadith of the fly’ were false?

“Verily, you are those who have disputed about that of which you have knowledge. Why do you then dispute concerning that which you have no knowledge? It is Allah Who knows, and you know not.” (Qur’an 3:66)
