Judging people with tattoos

“O you who believe! Let not some people among you laugh at others, perhaps they may be better than them.” (Qur’an 49:11)

“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other.” (Qur’an 49:12)

To be certain, for Muslims to get tattoos is a sin. Muslims should not seek to get tatoos. However, we have to remember that not everyone is born and raised as a Muslim. There are also situations where a person is born as a Muslim but not raised as a Muslim. The call of Islam and the surrender to the mercy of Allah went all over the world. There were many people of various cultures that had tattoos. These people would enter Islam with tattoos they previously had.

Those tribes also did not have access to excision surgery.

Brother, Shaykh Hatim Harith Al Abdissalaam is mentioning something very important.

  1. There is no rule in Islam that people with tattoos
  2. It is recommended to remove tattoos -if it does not cause hardship.
  3. There are brothers involved in calling others to Islam that will often intentionally ignore those with tattoos

There was an unfortunate incident in Oman some years back where one of our brothers came to visit Oman and was unfortunately denied entry into the Masjid, due to his tattoos.

When Shaykh Hatim Al Abdissalaam heard about this he reached out to the brother and he spoke with the security personal at the Masjid.
